Tarifa

Tarifa - The wind capital of Europe

We are at the southern-most tip of Spain, and only 11km from Morocco. It is this proximity between the two continents that gives Tarifa its legendary number of windy days per year, due to the wind being squeezed between the two land masses through the straits of Gibraltar. Also being the very south of Spain - it is much warmer than the UK and Ireland! So come and visit us and start (or improve) kitesurfing, soak up the sun, and come and experience the magical town of Tarifa.

Tarifa - the Town.

It is a small, laid-back town which attracts people from all parts of the globe. Many for Europe's best kite and windsurfing conditions, others simply to relax in some of the medieval old town's bars, cafes and chill lounges. In the summer months the narrow streets really come alive both day and night, offering a wealth of culinary and cocktail delights, good music, and an unbeatable party atmosphere. Throughout the year, this small town has a great community spirit, and you will instantly feel welcomed and amongst friends.

Tarifa - Wind

Levante & Poniente - two of the most common words in and around town (well, maybe after "Mojito"), are the prevailing wind directions. Poniente is the westerly wind, and Levante easterly. One of these winds will settle in and blow from a few days up to a few weeks, then (after normally a day's respite) the other one takes over. This gives Tarifa over 300 windy days a year.

If you are unlucky enough to have no wind, we have many partners in and around town so that we can offer other activities . . . . including Mountain Biking, Rock Climbing, Scuba Diving, Golf (see Partners section for a more complete list).

Tarifa - Beaches

Right in the town and stretching for 10km west is the beautiful wide, open Los Lances beach. This is a perfect spot in Poniente winds. Lots of space to learn and practise on the beach and in the water. If the wind is blowing Levante we have many possiblities depending on the strength of the wind, including Valdevaqueros, Getares and Palmones, all a short drive away. There are other beaches further afield to give us the chance to kite on most days when there is wind.
